Thursday 16 July:

A somewhat strange day. The very early hours of Wednesday morning had seen an ‘unofficial’ (and unauthorised) replacement statue installed on the Colston plinth in the centre of town. Marc Quin’s rather beautiful black resin statue of BLM protester Jen Reid (based on a photograph of Ms Reid when she stood on the plinth in the June protest) was creating quite a stir (in a good way) and so, first thing this morning, I decided to go and look at it (it seemed inevitable that it would be removed relatively quickly by the powers-that-be). I arrived just before 6am – only to find that the plinth was empty (the ‘replacement’ statue had been removed less than 24 hours after installation)(see image). It turned out - according to the Guardian newspaper - that it had been removed at 5.20am – so I’d missed it by little more than 30 minutes!
Spent much of the day reading my ‘Lockdown’ book (certainly a ‘thriller’ – which I finished at the very end of the day) and exploring possible urban sketching locations in Inday (as you do) in advance of Saturday’s ‘virtual’ meet-up.
Got together with Gail+Ian, Carolyn+Cara and Mags+Jeremy via zoom in the evening, which was very nice. Today had originally been planned as a get-together lunch with Fay to celebrate her 80th birthday so, instead, Cara had suggested the zoom get-together. Sadly, in the end, Fay backed out… I think the prospect of having to deal with technology on her own was too much for her. Hopefully we’ll get to meet up for lunch sometime reasonably soon instead?
